Non-Linear Analyses

Non-linear Analysis is required under a few circumstances:

                        1.  Stresses approach or exceed the yield strength of the material

                            2.  Deflections become large relative to the size of the modeled structure

                            3.  The structure is expected to buckle

In this very simplistic example of a piece of Aluminum flatbar, the object has undergone plastic deformation...stresses have exceeded the yield strength as shown in the stress graph where the curve "flatens" and then "takes off". This failure corresponds to the rapid change in deflection where the flatbar is no longer capable of carrying the increasing load being applied. While the structure has not reached ultimate failure, it would soon do so.

In certain situations, this failure location may be desirable. A proper design can save a structure from catastrophe or it can specify the catastrophic location with great accuracy.
